Diving the East Coast of Bonaire
Thanks to the emergence of Bonaire East Coast Diving, dive excursions on the windward side of the island are now an option for just about any diver. Bonaire East Coast Diving acquired a boat especially designed for the diving the windward side of Bonaire. The Zodiac Hurricane 920 is an extremely sturdy and stable RIB (rigid inflatable boat) powered by two 225 hp Yamaha four stroke engines, and equipped with all the necessary safety gear. It can accommodate 10 passengers in addition to their highly trained dive master and boat captain.
The
establishment of the Bonaire Marine Park in the early 1980's and local
dive operators enthusiastic efforts to protect the reefs has been essential
in helping to keep the islands marine ecosystem pristine. However no where
on the west coast or around Klein Bonaire do the narrow fringing coral
reefs contain as much lush coral growth or abundant fish and invertebrate
populations as on the rarely visited east coast.
Couple the effects of less diver impact with the differing nutrient mix that is brought in by the clean oceanic water arriving on the east coast, and it is little wonder that divers see with regularity a number of species rarely spotted on the leeward side. Most notable is the "big stuff" such as rays and sharks. Hawksbill turtles, although not an unusual sighting on the west coast, and here in numbers and joined by less commonly seen green turtles and rarely seen leatherbacks.
All
dive trips with Bonaire East Coast Diving depart from
the fisherman's pier at the south side of Lac Bay (the
Sorobon side.) While you are out diving, your non-diving companions can
try their hand at windsurfing with either
Jibe City or
Bonaire Wind Surf Place
or simply lie out on the beach in this peaceful setting.
Lac Bay is one of the most picturesque locations on the island and a great place to spend time afternoon after your dive, so we suggest you stay and enjoy the colorful atmosphere of the area before heading home. The Hang Out Bar at Jibe City is one of the most relaxing bars on the island (not to mention the view!) offering sandwiches, ice creams, coffee and a well stocked bar.
